We then went in to Hawi for some shopping and homemade ice cream before boarding the mini-bus for the trip home.Ĭan't forget to mention our guide, who made a great excursion into a perfect adventure. Lunch was a catered deli lunch that was both filling and delicious. This site was on a cliff overlooking the Kohala coast, and the views were breathtaking. we boarded the 6-wheeler and off-roaded to another site for lunch. There were also lots of mosquitoes, which were not all deterred by the bug spray.Īfter the hike. There were steep inclines, narrow paths, and some slippery spots, so the hike is definitely not for anyone who has trouble hiking over this type of terrain. It's about 1.5 miles long and took us about an hour and a half to complete. The hike was an easy one, with many stops and breaks throughout. We also got to explore and learn about an ancient plantation and an aqueduct system that was built in the early 1900s. We got to sample guavas picked off the trees, smell the ginger blooms, and swim in the refreshing pool of one of the many waterfalls we visited. The entire hike was a feast for the eyes, ears, and soul. The trail took us through the rain forest and down into ravines, where we found the waterfalls. There were also backpacks and raincoats available to anyone who wanted them. Our tour guide provided us with snacks, water bottles (which we got to keep), bug spray, and walking sticks. All four members of my family loved the rough ride and the stunning views along the way, and it only got better once we hit the trail. We off-roaded accross pastures, through ravines, and past guava groves to the trailhead. At Hawi, we transferred to a 6-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicle and continued on to the private lands to which the tour company has access. Along the way, our guide entertained and educated us with the history, geography, and geology of the beautiful Kohala region. We boarded a comfy mini-bus in Kailua-Kona (not far from the airport), and were driven up to Hawi. We made the reservations thinking we were going to ride a bus to a trail, hike past a couple of waterfalls, and get to swim in one. ![]() at our resort totally undersold the excursion (no offense to that fabulous lady!). We thoroughly enjoyed this trip, from beginning to end. Thanks Taj couldn't have had a better time. The views and information Taj gave us on our way there and home about the Volcano's and history of the island, the birds finished the trip.I even got up the next day none the worse for wear. The sandwiches were so fresh and filling that I had the 2nd half the next day and it still tasted like it was made that day. There was waterfalls, walks on bridges going up and down trails that I am so glad I took this tour.Īfter our swim in the waterfall we hiked back up the trail to our van and went to a gorgeous spot overlooking the ocean and cliffs. Taj made sure we were careful and safe in our walk. It was an energetic walk through private property that took some energy (But I am only in moderate shape) and I was able to do it quite well. We were provided with water, walking sticks, rain cover, towel as well as a back pack to carry our things in. I got to swim in a waterfall that I probably will never have a chance to do again.įrom the time we were picked up by Taj (our guide) in a most comfortable mini tour van with captain seats a maximum of 14 people in a tour to the beginning of our tour Taj was knowledgeable, fun and caring of all our needs.
